ICC Songs is dedicated to helping disciples learn to sing to their Lord with the fullest potential that God gives.   All too often I have heard it jokingly said, and sometimes not so jokingly, that we are to make a “joyful noise” to the Lord.   This of course is a phrase that occurs in several Old Testament passages (Ps 66:1, 81:1, 95:1-2, 98:2-4, & 100:1 all KJV).   Certainly God does hear our hearts even if all we can do is croak out the words in a monotone.   If that is all we can do, fine, but I don’t think being satisfied with that is the spirit of singing that I read about in God’s Word.

The word “sing” occurs 107 times in the NIV Bible!   “Song” occurs 80 times and “sang” occurs 24 times.  Singer or singers occurs an additional 34 times. The word “baptize” and all its variants occur only 89 times.

Consider the following verses (all NIV):
  • Psalm 33:3 “Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.”
  • Psalm 108:1 “My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul.”
  • Rom 15:9 "Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles; I will sing hymns to your name."
  • I Cor 14:15 “I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.”
  • Ps 45:1 “My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skilful writer.”
I am an engineer, not a musician.   I grew up spiritually in a congregation that loved to sing.   The singing of the congregation was like listening to a choir.   Nearly everyone learned to sing one of the parts of the songs and the effect was inspiring.   Men actually sang the Bass or Tenor parts and not the melody!   At first I could not sing, but with much effort I learned to sing Bass.   I made an effort to sit next to someone who could sing the Bass parts because I could not read the music well enough to figure it out.   Over time I got to where I could sing reasonably well.

It is my hope that this web page provides the tools to inspire more of us to learn how to sing in four part harmony.   Even more I hope it leads to a greater love for the old hymns that so beautifully praise our Lord, and that can touch one’s heart so powerfully.
