Frequently Asked Questions

1) Why does Internet Explorer not download the NWC files correctly when I Left-Click on the song links? Answer: I originally thought this was a combined problem of my Web Host and ID. However, having moved to a new host and implementing the correct MIME type, the problem still exits, so this is purely a problem with IE.  The work-around is to Right-Click on the song link and select Save Target As... to save the file to your disk drive.  From there you can open it with NoteWorthy. The other solution is to use a different (non-brain-dead) browser such as FireFox or Netscape.  IE seems to work correctly on some PCs, but I have yet to determine why that is.

2) What is the quickest way to control playback if I am using NoteWorthy Composer Editor?

Answer: F5 will play the song from where-ever you last clicked in the score.  All parts will be played.  Shift-F5 will do the same thing as F5, except only the currently highlighted part will be played.  So that is the quickest way to just play just tenor, for example.  F6 stops play.  The HOME key moves to the start of the score, and the END key  moves to the end.  You can also use Tools>Mute List... and select any combination of parts to play.  That is how the individual files were made for soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.

3) I'm not happy with the sound produced by NoteWorthy.  Can it be made better?
Answer: The sound quality is highly dependent on the sound card in your computer.  The least expensive sound cards are not likely to produce a quality result.  An upgrade to your card would make an improvement.  This may not be practical in a Laptop.  Your speakers or headphones are also important.  Small speakers may not sound very good for the bass parts, even with a good sound card.  You can also experiment with changing the playback options by using the menu Tools>Options... and then selecting the Midi tab.  If you have more than one available playback device listed, try switching a different one in (and switch the original one out).  This may help in some cases.

4) Why did you chose to use the Rhodes Piano instrument?
Answer: After much experimentation with playback on different computers and using different Midi playback devices (and also upgrading my sound card), I decided the Rhodes Piano sounded best for use with helping voice pitch during singing.  It produces a reasonably clean note and is easy to hear the pitch.  Other instrument choices may produce a more pleasing sound for casual listening, but not for voice training.  The choice was made on the basis of what sounded best with most of the different PCs and device settings.

5) The NoteWorthy browser plug-in seems to work fine for me.  Why do you recommend against using it?
Answer: I found that the plug-in does not recognize or play Fermatas (the little dots with a half circle above it).  Many songs depend on these to properly lengthen a note duration. Without them the song just does not sound right.  I also believe that other tempo related features may not work with the plug-in, but I have not done any extensive testing since I had deemed the Fermata issue to be worth avoiding.

6) You indicate that NoteWorthy does not run on Mac OS or Linux - are there any options at all for these operating systems?
Answer:  For Linux there is a work-around.  NoteWorthy has been successfully run using the WINE emulator.  Unfortunately for Mac OS I know of no alternative to play the NoteWorthy files.

7) Are you going to support non-English versions of the songs?
Answer:  Right now, early in the development of the site, I am personally going to focus on getting the songs done with English lyrics.  After that I am more than willing to work on non-English versions if someone would supply me with the lyrics.  Of course, if anyone is willing to modify the English NoteWorthy files with the correct non-English lyrics I would be more than happy to post them to the site.

8) When are you going to add some of the newer songs from "Songs of the Kingdom" to the web site?
Answer:  The short answer unfortunately is never.  Please see the Copyright Issues page for more detail.  Many of the songs you wish for have copyrights held by DPI or licensed by DPI.  For us to use those songs here, even if it were legal, would go against the purpose of ICC Songs - our purpose does not include competing with DPI.
